What to Pack for Your Surf Trip to the Algarve (and What to Leave at Home)
Planning a surf trip is exciting, but every surf destination requires a different packing. If you are not sure what to bring to a Surf Trip to The Algarve, this blog is for you.
We’ve welcomed hundreds of surfers to Tiny Whale Surf Lodge, and we’ve seen it all, so we share with you some tips of what to bring here:
Surf Essentials
If you’re joining us at Tiny Whale, we provide all the surf equipment you’ll need — surfboards, wetsuits, leashes, and wax. But if you’re still tempted to bring your own gear, here’s our take:
- Your own board? Only if you’re truly comfortable on it and it fits your travel plans. If you’re not 100% sure, we have a full quiver here, from foamies to performance shapes, all ready for your level.
- Your wetsuit? We’ve got high-quality wetsuits available, but if you have a favorite, bring it along. Just make sure it’s minumum a 3/2mm, although we always recommend a 4/3mm. Water temperature oscilates in between 14-22ºC, with warmest waters in between September and half November.
- Fin key, surf wax, leash string? If you’re bringing your own board, yes. Otherwise, we’ve got all that covered. Make sure the wax matches the temperature of the water mentioned before.
- Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated is key (and we have filtered water available at the lodge). We provide one in your en-suite rooms but better if you bring one with you for the surf lessons, you will need it! we will always bring a big bottle for you to re-fill your water bottle.
- Sunscreen (reef-safe preferred): The sun here is strong year-round.
- A Poncho, your best friend after the surf sessions: Nothing like fitting into your poncho warn and cozy after surfing, also usefull of course to get changed. At Tiny Whale we will give you one.
Clothing: Less is More
The Algarve is blessed with sunshine most of the year, and life at the lodge is pretty relaxed. Think comfortable and casual.
- Swimwear (x2): For pool sessions, under your wetsuit, or a post-surf dip in the ocean.
- Boardshorts / bikini / surf leggings: Whatever you’re comfortable moving in.
- Comfortable clothes: Think tees, hoodies, leggings, shorts, or joggers. You'll spend a lot of time doing yoga, skating, or lounging after surfing.
- One or two outfits for evenings out: The local restaurants are chill, no need to go fancy.
- Light jacket or jumper: Evenings can get breezy, especially if north wind is blowing.
- Flip flops and skating shoes: Ready for what's important.
Pro tip: We have a washing machine and drying area on-site, so you can pack lighter than you think.
Extras Worth Bringing
- Lip balm with SPF: Your lips will thank you.
- Travel adapter (if needed): Portugal uses Type C/F plugs (EU standard).
What to Leave at Home
- Too many outfits: You’ll likely live in your poncho.
- High heels or formalwear: Not needed here.
- Beach towels: We’ve got plenty for surf and pool use.
