Tiny Whale Surf Lodge is one of the leading surf holiday providers in Europe. It offers staff challenging job roles as well as the opportunity to develop their experience working in beautiful surroundings in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. 

At Tiny Whale there are two aspects to the businesses, a small surf school delivering lessons to external clients on a daily basis, and our main business as a boutique surf lodge offering week-long surf holidays. Our weekly surf holidays have a strong emphasis on coaching within a proven coaching structure giving guests with a broad understanding of the sport and an investment into their surfing future.

Surf Coach 


We’re not looking for your average surf coach! 
We’re looking for coaches who are passionate about helping people to develop their surf knowledge and capability and offering an exceptional and highly professional experience for guests. We’re keen to hear from individuals who are serious about delivering market-leading surf coaching and want to improve the level of surf holidays in the marketplace.

We’re looking for coaches who love to teach, want to improve their coaching
techniques far beyond the basics and develop a career in the surf industry. This role
would suit someone who is looking for a medium to a long term career opportunity in
the Algarve.

Due to the nature of the business coaches are expected to work across both parts of
the surf school, both with weekly and external clients. The role involves carrying out
surf school operations such as equipment and van maintenance, daily kit preparation
and pack down, and participating in social events with guests will also be within the
scope of the role. Overall as we are a small business flexibility and opens to a range
of tasks, duties, and work is essential.

Weekly Surf Lodge Guests
The main task is to coach groups of 4 guests over their weeks holiday. As well as
surf lessons, running activities including theory lessons, video & photo analysis,
skate surfing, forecasting and practical exercises in the pool.

External Guests
The team of 4/5 coaches will guide our group and private lessons for the general public.



  • Delivering a high level of coaching. Inspiring, supporting and motivating students and developing their surfing skills. This includes giving students tailored one to one feedback.
  • As an experienced surfer who can surf various surfboards, and draw different lines, you must be inspired to teach beginners and intermediates, as this is the level of most of our guests.
  • Responsible to keep all guests safe at all times.
  • You must be a great presenter/ teacher and not be afraid of standing in front of people, as well the ability to explain the technical aspects of surfing, ranging from someone that has never surfed before through to experienced surfers, in a fun and interactive way.
  • Execute lessons that are of a professional level, fun and also safe, but also be flexible to the needs and levels of each individual guest and thus a high amount of personal communication is required.
  • Being focused on each guest's individual expectations.
  • Ensuring our equipment and vehicles are looked after.
  • Pick up and drive each day the group for the best spot.
  • Needs to be a solid team player and committed to helping the team as a whole.
  • Cleaning all equipment daily. Wetsuits, surfboards, vans, lunch boxes.
  • Maintaining damaged equipment and reporting any faults to your line manager asap.
  • This is a small team, so everyone has to work hard to make the job most enjoyable for the whole team.
  • Selecting the best surf spots for the group. 
  • Tailoring sessions to suit group needs.
  • Cleaning equipment daily, including wetsuits, surfboards, vans and lunch boxes. 
  • Kit maintenance, including logging damage to kit, fixing kit, ordering new parts and spotting opportunities to reduce damage to equipment. 


  • Level 1 Surf Coaching certificate by the ISA, ASI or national governing body equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 years surf coaching experience.
  • RLSS, SLSGB Beach Lifeguard or Surf coach safety certificate.
  • Full driving license for driving in Europe. 
  • Highly proficient in spoken English.


  • Level 2 Surf Coaching certificate by the ISA, ASI or national governing body equivalent.
  • Additional coaching qualifications or teaching experience. 
  • Additional language/s, such as good command of either, Dutch, German or Spanish would be desired.
  • Basic knowledge of Portuguese will be helpful but not essential.
  • Teaching or coaching experience.

Surf Host

We are looking for highly professional and motivated hosts to work in our boutique surf lodge in the Algarve. If you are passionate about customer service and the hospitality business, we are looking for you. If you enjoy working in a small team with a solid work ethic and can be a valuable member of a small team then get in touch. 


The host presents a positive first impression of the Lodge with his/her friendliness, excellent service, and high standards and does everything in their power to make the experience of our guests unforgettable. A host at the Lodge is proactive and loves working in a surf-related hospitality branch.
The host must be able to carry natural conversation with our guests without sounding scripted or intrusive. Additionally, the Host cares for our guests by refilling beverages and performs housekeeping duties. If you are savvy with social media platforms this is a big pre!


Food & Beverage

  • Set up and serve breakfast.
  • Set up and serve dinner.
  • Stock control and filling up beverages.
  • Keeping all areas of Food & Beverages clean at all times.


  • Cleaning and maintaining the Lodge to a high standard.
  • Preparing rooms for check-in.

Customer Experience

  • Check-ins and check-outs.
  • Selling a wide range of customer activities & tours.
  • Customer liaison and socializing.
  • Answering customer questions.
  • Dealing with customer complaints.
  • Hosting, meals and nights out.


  • Communicates effectively throughout the villa, with guests, within the team, and with the manager.
  • Work accuracy and delivery to time.
  • This job will also include you uploading regular social media posts to help promote the business. 


  • Help manage the Bookings. You handle (potential) guests' inquiries professionally and effectively and convert sales opportunities that emerge with guest interactions that may contribute to the Lodge profitability. You will allocate rooms according to the guests' requirements.




  • A hospitality training is an asset.
  • Affinity with Surfing.
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts.
  • 6 months experience in a full-service (Surf) Lodge preferred.
  • Driving License.
  • Proven customer service / Sales Experience.
  • Highly proficient in spoken and written English and it's preferred to have an additional language. Good command of either, Dutch, German or Spanish would be desired.
  • Basic knowledge of Portuguese will be helpful but not essential.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced professional environment
