We’re Tiny Whale Surf Lodge - a Surf Lodge and Surf School established 10 years ago that’s based in Lagos, Algarve.

Our focus is on delivering the best surf and holiday experience possible. We run structured and intensive surf coaching weeks that involve using the latest and most effective teaching tools and strategies available. We also complement these surf coaching weeks with luxurious accommodation, fantastic food and dedicated service in addition to daily lessons for those who cannot join our Surf Lodge.

SURF COACH

 

We’re not looking for an average Surf Coach.

We’re looking for surf coaches who are passionate about surf coaching. This is a unique opportunity that would suit an individual with sound experience in the surf industry who’s willing to boost their surf coaching skills.

 

It’s also suited to someone looking for a long-term career prospect in the Algarve who wants to help other people develop their surf knowledge and surf skills whilst also providing an exceptional and highly professional experience for any and all guests. 

We’re keen to hear from individuals who are serious about offering first class surf coaching as well as those who want to improve the quality of surf holidays in the marketplace. Participating in social events with guests will also be within the scope of the role. Plus, as a small business, flexibility and a good work ethic are essential. 

 

There are two aspects to the surf school business at Tiny Whale: a boutique surf lodge offering weekly surf coaching programs as part of a surf holiday plus lessons delivered to external clients daily. 

Our weekly surf holidays place a strong emphasis on surf coaching with a proven coaching structure that gives guests a broad understanding of the sport and provides them with the tools to become a better surfer.

Your main goal here is to facilitate surf coaching for groups of 4 guests at a time. You’ll also offer surf lessons, run various activities such as theory sessions, video and photo analysis, surf skate, functional training sessions and lead practical exercises in the pool.

We want coaches who love to teach, want to improve their coaching techniques far beyond the basics and are keen develop a career in the surf industry.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

- Level 1 Surf Coaching Certificate by the ISA, ASI or national governing body equivalent

- RLSS, SLSGB Beach Lifeguard or Surf Coach Safety Certificate

- Full driver’s license for driving in Europe

- Highly proficient in spoken and written English

 

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Background in Sport Science (Sport Science Degree desirable)
  • Level 2 Surf Coaching Certificate by the ISA, ASI or national governing body equivalent preferred
  • Experience in building surf skate training, video coaching, dryland training and/or theory workshops (pool surf training sessions a bonus)
  • Additional coaching qualifications or teaching/coaching experience a plus
  • Additional language/s a plus (Dutch, German or Spanish preferable)
  • Basic knowledge of Portuguese is helpful but not essential

ASSISTANT SURF COACH

Our Assistant Surf Coach position is a golden opportunity for a young and enthusiastic individual who wants to take their first few steps in the *surf coaching and hospitality sector. 

 

This experience will see your surf skills improve under the tutelage of our professional surf coaches. It also gives you a chance to discover whether surf coaching suits you. Note that as a small business, flexibility and a good work ethic is essential. You’ll also be assisting the Tiny Whale surf school team in a variety of different duties.

An Assistant Surf Coach will work about 3 days a week. Hours and workload can change depending on the season but will not exceed 25 hours per week, which gives you plenty of time to surf and enjoy other activities. SURF PHOTOGRAPHER AND VIDEOGRAPHER

 

We’re seeking a Professional Photographer/Videographer to join our surf school team and provide high quality surf photography and videography services for our students.

 

This is a rare opportunity for those of you wanting to boost their career in the surf industry. After a positive and successful 2021 season that saw us add this position to our surf school team, we’ve now made this one of our most important postings when it comes to improving the overall experience of our guests.

 

The ideal candidate for this position is talented and creative with a knack for surf-related visual art. Your roles will include helping our surf coaching team with surf video coaching, capturing and editing clips of our students while surfing/surf skating plus taking videos and pictures of our guests during their stay at our surf lodge. In addition, you also need an understanding of how a surf business operates in order to enhance the company in the online marketplace.

HEAD CHEF

 

We’re looking for a highly professional and motivated chef to work in our boutique surf lodge located in the Algarve. If you’re experienced, forward-thinking and passionate about cooking healthy and diverse meals, we want to hear from you. The ideal candidate for this position will understand our clientele and always have a finger on the pulse of culinary trends.

 

The Head Chef will be responsible for creating healthy, delicious and nutritious restaurant-style two-course dinners in the evenings for up to 20 guests with varying diets. The role also includes creating healthy gourmet beach picnics for guests and the Tiny Whale team.

 

The quality of our guests’ experience at Tiny Whale is largely dependent on the food we serve on a daily basis. As our Head Chef, you should be able to create new recipes, prepare all types of different food using different cooking styles and handle food presentations. Our Head Chef is also responsible (together with our Lodge Manager) for the menu selection, the efficiency of kitchen service and the overall dining experience. You’ll mostly work with one other assistant with one or two hosts as helpers.

HOST

 

We’re looking for highly professional and motivated Hosts to work in our boutique surf lodge located in the Algarve. If you’re passionate about customer service and the hospitality business, we want you. You should enjoy working in a small team with a solid work ethic and be a valuable member of our Surf Lodge.

 

As a Host, you’ll be responsible for giving our clients the best experience possible during their stay. This includes making sure the rooms and common areas are kept clean and tidy, the food is amazing and properly served and that our guests stay super stoked throughout the duration of their holiday. 

 

Being a host is all about creating a positive first impression of the lodge using his or her friendliness, excellent service and high standards. In short, you should do everything in your power to make the experience of our guests unforgettable. A Tiny Whale host is proactive and loves working in the surf-related hospitality sector.

The Host must be able to engage in natural conversations with our guests without sounding scripted or intrusive. In addition, the Host cares for our guests by refilling beverages and performing housekeeping duties.

HANDYMAN

 

We’re looking for a passionate individual who’s also a handyman to help us with the maintenance of the lodge and our surf school vans.

Since the workload of this role can fluctuate considerably during the season, the candidate must be flexible and able to work on varying shifts.
