HOW WE COACH SURFING
We do it differently. We coach surfing the right way.
Our packages run from Saturday to Saturday
We know surf holidays are the best they can be when there’s a solid start and finish date to the groups trip for the week. You can arrive a day earlier (Friday) and leave a day later (Sunday) if there’s flight options for these days that are more convenient for you.
We’re serious about surf coaching!
Don’t worry you’re not signing yourself up for a week of 6am starts and intensive paddling drills! We just want to provide the best possible weeks coaching you’ll ever receive, and that includes highly qualified and dedicated surf coaches, a tailored surf coaching plan for the week just for you, plenty of video coaching and a variety of modern techniques to make you a better and more knowledgeable surfer.
Our Surf Lodge
We’re not your normal surf camp. We’ve upgraded our accommodation & food offering from previous years and are gradually updating our website to reflect all the changes. Forget cramped dorms & squashed private rooms and think sleek, stylish & airy boutique hotel. More info & pictures on our new lodge plus any of our current deals can be found by following us on Facebook & Instagram.
What’s included and pricing
Virtually everything you’ll need is included, apart from some spending money for two evenings out in our local town of Lagos and airport transfers. A full list of inclusions and prices are featured at the bottom of the package you are interested in on our website.
We know booking holidays can be tricky and it’s sometimes nice to speak to a real person. 7 days a week from 9am-5pm we have a knowledgeable team available if you need to chat with us at any point.
The Tiny Whale Team
We do it differently. We coach surfing the right way.
For too long surf coaching has been about large groups on the beach, with a lack of technique training, inadequate amounts of theory and generic coaching statements targeted at the group and not the individual. We decided it's time to change that and have developed an in-depth coaching week that allows us to focus on your individual needs. We want to improve your surfing whilst you're with us but also give you the tools to carry on your development when you leave. Read on to find out how we do it.
Our experienced surf coaches are not just great surfers, they are great teachers. That means they are strong communicators, are attentive to the different needs of each guest and have a deep knowledge of surf technique, conditions and ocean safety.
We are able to cater for all levels of surfer but have a strong focus on total beginners, beginners and intermediates. We promise to provide simple, clear instructions void of surfing jargon, which more often than not adds a layer of complexity you just don't want or need.
All coaches hold an ISA level 2 or above coaching badge or have the equivalent industry skills and experience, approved by our Head Surf Coach.
Most surf coaching experiences will offer at best a 6:1 ratio, others state 'small groups' but rarely does that mean 3:1. We guarantee a maximum of 3 students to 1 coach. That allows you to get to know the coach and for them to get to know you, providing a personalised coaching plan that develops consistently throughout the week you are with us.
Your plan will give you specific skills to learn each lesson and a clear understanding of why you're learning those skills.
Nothing beats coaching in the sea but there is a lot more to learn, including; surf etiquette, the theory behind technique, board design, ocean safety and how to read the conditions. All of which are best taught in front of a TV screen or with pens and paper out.
Video analysis has been one of the most important additions to our coaching armoury. We do this both at the beach for immediate feedback and back at the lodge for a more in-depth review. Seeing your own technique in action is a brilliant way to illustrate clear, actionable steps to improve your surfing.
The swimming pool (given the water is still) makes coaching duck-diving, turtle rolling, paddling technique and board agility a lot easier. The coaches can be more methodical and detailed in their approach and time invested on technique in the pool means more time spent surfing when you're at the beach.
Surf-Skate is also a great way to improve balance and learn the fundamentals of turning when surfing. We'll spend time at the lodge and at a local skate-park honing your technique.
We are firm believers that yoga is the perfect compliment to surfing. It's a great way to relax your body after a days surfing and equally a great way to energise your body before you go. Our yoga instructor Miri will work with you to develop your individual practice and yoga knowledge.
As a certified Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT®) Miri has over 7 years teaching of experience, regularly attending continued teacher training workshops all over the world. She brings the most up to date knowledge and proven techniques to her classes, making use of both traditional and modern perspectives.
“This was the best quality surf instruction I've had! I wasn’t expecting video coaching and it was a great bonus. I could really see the improvement in my surfing over the lessons… Great food, really lovely, attentive staff and nice, clean accommodation. It's the whole package!” — Savannah, London, Sept 2016
